The End of Space Ark Gallery

February 26, 2008

This past weekend, the Space Ark Gallery located in the the historic

Sunbeam Theater Building on Figueroa, and Avenue 58,

Sunbeam Theater

shed its terrestrial home and launched back into outer space. Its presence will be sorely missed in Highland Park.

Space Ark exemplified the funkiness that makes Highland Park so special. Hosting art show, film festivals, studio workshops, parties, live music, theater, cooking classes, meditation workshops, enviromental workshops, living off the grid moon-lit Thursdays,  and gerneral use as a community meeting place, Space Ark filled a much-needed role in Highland Park as a place to make things happen.

It’s funny cuz this place always represented a loss to me, as it came in after the Popular Resource Center, where we saw RATM play, and where the micro-radio station was based. When I visited space ark I could only think about what had already been lost.
