Too Much Good Stuff This Saturday
Saturday, October 4th presents itself as a day with too much good stuff. Living in Los Angeles, there is rarely a reason to stay home and not venture outside. Tomorrow is a date in LA with a ridiculous amount of events, all happening on one day, all within 10 miles of each other. Even with a 50% chance of rain, outside among Angelenos is going to be the place to be Saturday.
First there are the sporting events: Our Boys in Blue, The Los Angles (Trolley) Dodgers are scheduled to beat the Cubs at Dodger Stadium Saturday night. Earlier in the day, and down the 110 is the USC Trojan football game at the Coliseum, while at the same time, up the 110 is the UCLA Bruin football game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. And don’t forget the Track Cycling National Championships at the Carson Velodrome (also off the 110).
Then there’s politics: It just so happens that the leading ladies of the Republican, and Democratic parties will be hosting events in Los Angeles on Saturday. First off, there’s the Republican presidential rally at the Home Depot Center in Carson with that governor from Alaska, Sarah Palin. Later in the evening there is the Democratic Party fundraiser with Hillary Clinton at The Edison, downtown on 2nd & Main.
Another big event happening Downtown this same evening is the Friends of The LA River Rio Fest 2008. It is an Octoberfest themed event that is taking place on the 6th Street Bridge over the concrete channel where the Los Angeles river passes below.
Now how about some music? Also happening Downtown at 1st Street & Main Street, is the 3rd annual LA Weekly’s Detour Festival. Also this evening, just a few blocks from here, there’s a concert by the one and only Niel Diamond at the Staples Center. Across town, and back in the ole N-E-L-A, there is the wonderfully free and always rocking Eagle Rock Music Festival on Colorado Blvd from 5 to 11.
What about the Art? What’s a Saturday without Art? Glad you asked. Saturday also happens to fall on MUSEUMS FREE FOR ALL weekend. That essentially means that every museum that charges admission regularly, will be free on Saturday. Yay! Los Angeles County Museum of Art may be a good place to start: Free admission, an excellent art exhibition currently by Chicano artist, AND it also happens that this weekend is the annual Tarfest on the Miracle Mile.
The last event I’ll mention is one that seems to combine all the above: LA Decompression. The Los Angeles Decompression is a mini-Burning Man festival that takes place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park (aka The Cornfields). Music, food, art, bass, fire, poetry, performance, DJ’s, dance, rides, politics, and more, much more. This is the eighth year of LA Decom, a celebration of what the Los Angeles burner community experienced just a month earlier on the barren playa of the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. The show starts at Noon and goes to Midnight. $20 at the gate, or half price in costume or with a Gold Line ticket.
OK, I think I better get some rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.

The Eagle Rock event was excellent.
