What’s Up With This?

February 16, 2010

The opening of This, Los Angeles. Friday, 02.12.10.

This is new. This is a photography studio. This is a collaborative project.  This is a cultural institution. This is a recording studio. This is an indoor micro-skatepark. This is a creative space. This is an art gallery. This is a storefront. This is inside the historic Badour Building. This is a spot. This is that. This is now. This is Highland Park. This is past. This is future. This is caché. This is expression. This is concept. This is commerce. This is a dream. This is space. This is friends. This is phenomenon. This is daily. This is nightly. This is weekly. This is monthly. This is promising. This is 5906 Figueroa Street. This is THIS, Los Angeles.

Inside it was packed with art and packed with people.

Oh hey, is that local Eagle Rocker, and UK Christmas Number One singer Zack de la Rocha??

Somewhere in here was Liv Tyler as well as Danny Masterson among other celebs. But I didn't see them, I was too busy looking at the art.

Packed.

The kids had the best seat in the house: Dad's shoulders.

Lots of kiddies there. Makes sense, this IS Family-tastic Highland Park after all.

Juliette Lewis stops in to visit.

Aaron Brothers must have been scratching their heads as to why they couldn't keep any white frames in stock.

iPhones in the air, wave them like you just don't care...

Sensory overload.

Lots of babes in the house tonight.

This, Los Angeles 5906 North Figueroa Street. Stop in when it is not so crowded, or call for an appointment: 323.982.9002

All roads lead to La Estrella #3. (PBR & Boxed Water compliments of This.)

White frames and pieces mounted too high and too close together- terrible presentation for most pieces. I suppose that for the opening of the gallery itself, it may be just a temporary layout for the sake of the event, but no self-respecting artist would allow a gallery to dictate such framing standards and then hang them in such a way.

Thanks for the write up! And thanks for coming out to our opening, it was a great night.

And Jones, ever heard of salon style? It’s what you do when you have 105 world renowned artists in one grand opening “friends” show. Come down and see it and if you still feel that way I’ll buy you lunch, and give you some water in a box.

I am excited about THIS opening.I love attending the NELA Artwalk, and having some more substantial galleries establishing themselves in HP is great!

    As for Jones Foyer’s comment:
I was thankful for that hanging style – it was so crowded opening night I could really only get a good look at the pieces that were hanging up high.
I also thought that the white frames were a good choice for continuity and visual cleanliness – much better than having black fames cutting up the space. With that many peices together, the white frames blend with the wall and help the colorful art stand out.

I couldn’t be happier seeing green bo-heems making a go of it in the Highlands. Best of luck ThIS. I look forward to visiting your gallery soon.

Amen brother good to see more folks discovering our neck of the woods. The vibe looks pretty good from my perspective and I look forward in visiting This in the not too far distance.

I hope THIS is able to turn these crowds into a commercially viable gallery. It can be easy to bring the crowds out once a month, but sustaining foot traffic in Highland Park is tough!
