Chinatown Summer Nights

August 12, 2010

Chinatown, Los Angeles 90012.

Just 10 minutes away from Highland Park on the Metro Gold Line is Chinatown. Although Jake would like to forget about it, every Saturday night in August, Chinatown is the most happening place in the region.

Chinatown Summer Nights is a weekly event in what is technically known as Los Angeles’ New Chinatown (built in what was Los Angeles’ Little Italy when the original Chinatown had to make way for Union Station in 1930.)

Food Trucks? Yup. They’re here too.

For each Saturday in August, the event brings back the vitality of the once-famous tourist attraction with musicians, DJ’s (some from KCRW), dance and martial arts lessons, craft workshops, a craft marketplace, restaurants, food trucks, street performers, cooking demonstrations, shopping, art galleries, and good ole’ people watching.

Before there was Disneyland. Los Angeles had these sort of touristy places like Chinatown to visit. There was Olvera Street, Pacific Ocean Park in Venice, The Pike in Long Beach, the movie palaces of Broadway and other such themed places that the streetcar could take us to spend the afternoon at. Of course we traded all that for TV and a $76 ticket to Disneylandia.

The fun in Chinatown continues every Saturday in August starting at 5pm and going until Midnight. And according to the Militant Angeleno, there will be a “Craft Fair” Night Market held on the 14th and 28th. If you don’t want to walk the two blocks from the Metro Station there’s a free shuttle that will take you there. And if that’s not enough, there’s also complimentary bicycle valet service off Hill Street, provided by the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.

The events are absolutely positively FREE. Which is good because you will need that money to spend on all the good food, shopping, and the coin-operated restrooms.
