That is a Tasty Burger

Penny’s Veggie Burger Combo

This is and never will be a food blog. There are plenty of places (some would say too many) to go for that sort of thing. But I must say, as far as food goes in Highland Park, Penny’s does make a tasty burger.

Figueroa & York: burgers, T-shirts, and lots of pigeons.

A tasty burger yes, but more specifically, a tasty veggie burger. Some time over the past year, the venerable 90042 institution, Penny’s Burgers replaced the burger part of their veggie burger from a Garden Burger to a veggie patty made by Inglewood’s Don Lee Farms. This is the same veggie patty used by the highly esteemed Pie N Burger in Pasadena. (A place where Pulitzer Prize winning food critic, Jonathan Gold said he would like to go for his last meal.) This updated charbroiled veggie burger at Penny’s is “Da Bomb!” And with their season salted french fries, all the better. No need for truffle oil here.

Penny’s has long been a go-to place for fast cheap food. Opened in 1969, this greasy spoon is known for it’s ample portions and cheap breakfasts. The place is nothing fancy. Not even a drive-thu on this busy intersection. The food is far from being organic or good for you, but if you like to indulge into the cuisine of grease, there is no better place locally than Penny’s.

Very excited to hear this. I haven’t stopped at Penny’s in a long time, but I am always on the lookout for a good veggie burger and will give this one a try this weekend. With fries. Thanks!!

I know this post is about the delicious veggie burger (which now Im going to have to try!) but for those meat-lovers, the PASTRAMI burger is equally amazing…and equally greasy, delightful – nonetheless. I had one last year and have not had the courage to go for it again. haha so gooood!

    thanks for posting this waltarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Was quite suprised to see that Penny;s was still there on a recent trip to LA.

This pale use to be the spot for dinner on Friday nights. That was back in 1969, just after it opened.

I believe it was run by a Greek family at that time.

Will be in LA for a week in Sept. and now have two food joints to hit Falarios (sp?) pizza on north Fig. about a half block past the Highland Theater and Penny’s. OK, Phillip’s too.

    I love LA!
